Reading: This week in reading, we will wrap up our Fantasy unit. Students will learn that just as in life,
characters in fantasy books are not all good or all bad, but in fact, they are rather complex. Then, students
will learn that fantasy readers try to figure out if repeated or highlighted images, objects, characters, or
settings are a symbol of something else, and how this symbol might connect to a possible theme for the
story. Finally, we will learn that readers gain insights into the real world by understanding and interpreting
the metaphors and allegories that exist in fantasy. Finally, we will show all we know about reading fantasy
by answering comprehension questions after reading a fantasy text. Students will answer questions that
deal with the following four learning targets: analyzing parts of a story in relation to the whole, analyzing
author’s craft, determining themes, and comparing and contrasting story elements and themes. On Thursday,
we will celebrate all of our hard work as Fantasy readers!

Writing: This week in writing, we will wrap up our fiction short stories unit. Students will use revision
strategies to revise their final piece. We will learn that writers don’t simply reread, they reread with a lens.
Writers vary their lenses according to what the writer values for their work. Then, we will learn to listen to
our writing carefully, choosing words, structures, and punctuation that help us to convey the content, mood,
tone, and feelings of our pieces. Finally, we will celebrate our published work on Thursday! Students will
have an opportunity to experience the thrill of receiving feedback from their peers!

Math: This week in math, we will wrap up our multiplying and dividing fractions unit. We will learn how to
divide whole numbers by unit fractions and to divide unit fractions by non-zero whole numbers. Finally, we
will take a day to review all we have learned throughout the unit in order to prepare for our assessment on
Thursday. Be on the lookout for a review that will come home tomorrow.

Social Studies: This week in Social Studies, we will take a quiz over the 13 colonies. Students are
expected to label the 13 colonies on a map. We will also tie up Chapter 8 Facing Slavery. Students
have been reading and talking about the dilemma the people of West Africa faced when they were
forced into slavery.

Science: Students will rotate every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday for science. Our class is currently
studying Environments with Miss. Kohut.

Reading: This week in reading, students will learn that knowledgeable readers assume that some themes
are so universal that they appear in more than one book and across history as well. We will take a day to
self-assess our progress using our learning progression and set new goals to move forward in our fantasy
reading. On Wednesday, we will begin the third bend in our unit, When Fact and Fantasy Collide. Students
will learn that readers of fantasy refer to nonfiction texts and references to more fully understand the world
they are reading about. Also, we will discuss the role specific vocabulary plays in fantasy novels. Finally,
we will learn that just as in life, characters in fantasy books are not all good or all bad, but in fact are rather
complex.

Writing: This week in writing, students will learn that fiction writers create their best drafts when they
experience the world through their character’s skin. Then, we will study published leads in order to revise
our own leads. After that, we will learn to orient our readers with the setting. Students will “stay in the
scene” making sure the action and dialogue are grounded in the setting. Lastly, we will work to write
strong endings. Students will do their best to craft the endings that their stories deserve. In particular, they
will make their endings mesh with and serve the purposes of their stories.

Math: This week in math, we will apply our understanding of division to divide fractions. Students will start
by using their understanding of division as sharing and their understanding of fractions as part of a whole
to solve problems involving dividing fractions. Students will learn to use models, concepts of division, and
concepts of fractions to learn how to divide two whole numbers where the quotient is a fraction, and to
write a fraction as a division expression.

Social Studies: This week in Social Studies, we will begin our new unit, The Colonial Period. Students
will work to answer the question, “how does where you live affect how you live?” Students will compare
and contrast life in each of the 13 colonies by relating how geography impacted the development of each
colonial region.  They will also examine patterns of interaction among various cultural groups and among
the colonies themselves. Just as in the past, students will see and make connections to how location continues
to influence the development of people and understand how the diversity of where they live affects their day to
day experience.

Science: Students will rotate every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday for science. Our class is currently studying
Environments with Miss. Kohut.

Reading: This week in reading, students will learn that in fantasy stories, characters face different kinds of
dragons--some are literal, while others are metaphorical dragons symbolizing conflicts faced by those
characters. Also, we will learn that insightful readers mine fantasy stories to discover themes and lessons
that might apply to their own lives. Later in the week, we will learn that fantasy stories follow a quest
structure, and to achieve a deeper understanding of the story, it’s valuable to investigate both the external
and internal quests of major characters. Finally, we will compare themes in fantasy and history.

Writing: This week in writing, students will learn that writers sketch out possible plotlines for stories often
on “story mountains” that represent traditional story structure. Also, students will learn that, in a sense,
writing scenes is the same as writing Small Moment stories. Students will learn to SHOW don’t tell. Finally,
students will work to create their best drafts by experiencing the world through their character’s skin,
letting the story unfold as it happens to us.

Math: This week in math, we will continue to multiply fractions. Students will review all they know so far
about multiplying fractions. Also, we will add to our knowledge by learning how to use models and the
algorithm to multiply a fraction by a fraction and mixed numbers. Later in the week, students will work to
find the area of a rectangle. Students will continue to make sense of problems and persevere.

Science: Students will rotate every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday for science. Our class is currently
studying Environments with Miss. Kohut.
