5C News November 26-December 1

I hope everyone enjoyed Thanksgiving with friends and family! I am excited to get back to learning and fun in Room 501.

Safe surf: Responsible Digital Citizenship: Tomorrow students will learn about Responsible Digital Citizenship from the presenters at Safe surf!
Students will learn…
  • To become good cyber citizens and help ensure a bright future
  • To recognize cyberbullying and help put a stop to it
  • To identify tricks and secrets that predators may use
  • To understand the ramifications of inappropriate online behavior
  • To utilize social networking in an age-appropriate and respectful manner

Hearing Screening: Monday, November 27th @ 2:50
Reading: This week in reading, we will begin Unit 3, Social Issues. Students will learn about some of the issues that exist in the world that authors have woven into their texts. Students will delve into books looking for the problems and injustices that affect not just the character and the reader but entire groups of people in their communities and beyond.
Writing:  This week in writing, we will begin Unit 3, From Essay and Narrative to Memoir. Students will learn to use their notebooks to research their lives, collecting both entries and idea-based writing. That is, they will learn that writers write both “big” and “small,” writing about large ideas or theories and then zooming in to write about one time when that idea was true. After a bit of collecting and pondering, children will be ready to select one of these entries as a “seed idea.”
Math: This week in math, we will continue to use models and strategies to divide whole numbers and decimals.  Students will learn how to use estimation to decide if a quotient is reasonable when dividing by two digit divisors.  When it comes to dividing with decimals, the students will determine patterns and ask themselves if their answers seem reasonable.
Social Studies:This week in Social Studies, we will continue our Native Americans unit. Students start working on putting together our Native American Fashion Show. They will be taking what they have learned about their cultural region (how where they live effect how they live) to create pieces to wear in the fashion show. Our fashion show is scheduled for Tuesday, December 5th. The time TBD later this week. Study guides will go home this Friday and our end of the unit assessment will be Friday, December 8th.
Important Vocabulary: cultures, nomadic, cultural regions, artifacts, mesas, and gorges
Science: Remember: Students will rotate every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday for science. Our class is currently studying Mixtures and Solutions with Ms. Epstein.
